There are mentors, there are leaders, and then there are rare souls whom Allah blesses with hearts that exist solely to uplift others. Professor Umaru A. Pate is one of those rare souls. To the world, he was the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Kashere. To me, he is far more than that a father, a mentor, a source of wisdom, and a man whose belief in me has been one of the greatest blessings of my journey. Every conversation with him is a lesson. Every piece of advice is a guide. Every encounter leaves me inspired to become a better person. One thing I have always admired about him is the purity of his heart. He helps people not because he expects recognition, but because that is who he is. He has changed the lives of countless people some he knows personally and many he may never know. Across Nigeria and beyond, there are people whose lives carry his fingerprints, even if they have never had the opportunity to tell him “thank you.” As Vice-Chancellor, he transformed Federal University Kashere into a true citadel of learning. He built more than structures; he built hope, opportunities, confidence, and a culture of excellence. His tenure may have ended, but his legacy continues to speak through the institution he strengthened and through the thousands of lives he has touched. I had the privilege of serving as SRC President during his time as Vice-Chancellor, and I can confidently say that I witnessed leadership at its finest leadership rooted in compassion, humility, justice, and genuine love for humanity. He never stopped believing in young people, and he never stopped investing in their future. Greatness is not measured by titles or positions. Greatness is measured by the number of lives you change, the hope you restore, and the prayers people whisper on your behalf when they remember your kindness. By that measure, Professor Umaru A. Pate is truly a great man. Thank you for being more than a mentor. Thank you for being a father to many of us. Thank you for believing in us before we believed in ourselves. May Allah (SWT) preserve you, increase you in wisdom and honour, bless you with excellent health, and continue to make you a source of guidance and inspiration for generations to come. May your legacy never fade, and may every life you have touched become a continuous charity that speaks for you in this world and in the Hereafter. Some people are remembered because of the offices they held. Others are remembered because of the lives they transformed.
