I'm not an expert but shouldn't you space them out? Won't they just rot faster this way? also animals are sensitive to smells right? what if they smell other animals near that pile and stop approaching it?

Always leave Nature it's cut. I don't remove them, but I do have a line for each tree where I will not harvest above it. Those are for the local fauna & them alone. (I live in a city so it's mostly birds & smaller critters here.)
