I have only relapsed in my dreams but I’m just a baby sober. But I watched drugs kill my sister. I’m not giving alcohol the opportunity again on me

Relapse is part of the disease. Not recovery. If recovery is the treatment, how can relapse (return to use) be part of the treatment? 🤔🤔 It’s like saying, the cure for cancer is more cancer?

You can have a Lapse and not go back into a full relapse

I don’t know, I think for some it can be, but for someone like myself, hearing that would make me feel like I had an excuse to relapse. A free pass, if you will.

it's not part of recovery, it's part of that person's story.
Big difference.

I’m not disagreeing… I do want to say that my first sponsor told me “relapse doesn’t have to be part of your story.” That was helpful for me, and gave me hope like… I can be done without relapsing. Relapse isn’t a given. And I don’t have to have relapsed to share helpful experience. I know you’re not saying otherwise, and relapsing can be really powerful to experience and to share. No judgment whatsoever. I just think, while so many of us do relapse, it’s still helpful to hear that it doesn’t HAVE TO be part of the story. It helped me.

Yes relapse can be a teachable moment. However, in my experience a lot of times when my clients say relapse is a part of recovery is because they use that as an excuse. A reservation. Relapse doesn’t have to be a part of it if you manage your symptoms, use your tools, and internalize that you are no longer someone who uses.

First of all, dude, that’s not a relapse. That’s getting drunk or getting high. We believe that if we stop drinking or stop using and then we go back that’s some kind of relapse. That’s just doing what we know how to do. The miracle of recovery is that people like us can stay sober and clean without going back to drinking and drugging. But we have to change. We have to have a spiritual awakening. Until that happens, we’re not relapsing we’re just using and drinking again. A person who has had a personality change, who has had a profound alteration in their reaction to life. And then goes back, that is a relapse.

Relapse helped me to realize how much I enjoyed being clean and sober and the rewards of it. It also made me realize how much I truly did not want to get high anymore.
