Did you know that this and Shakespeares Hamlet is the retelling of the same story? Prince Amleth is a medieval Scandinavian fairy tale and legend figure. The tale is recounted in writing from the 12th century by the Danish historian Saxo Grammaticus in the work Gesta Danorum😁

The only thing I didn’t like in the Northman was the casting of Nicole Kidman, especially in the scenes where her character is a young woman. It was pulling me put of the film.

Fabulous video essay. I think comparisons are extremely effective sometimes in teaching why something works or doesn’t from case to case. It would be even stronger if you brought a few personal reflections from the physical experiences of watching these films. Very captivating stuff!

I do like that Robert Eggers' movies make the audience meet it on its terms, like actual history. You have to understand the flaws and virtues of the people and the times they're in.

I like how Egger’s movies force you to acknowledge the historical context. The world was different, morality and culture were different and oftentimes less palatable/marketable to modern audiences. I’m a big history fan and I love his loyalty to the “times”

This clip makes The Northman story sound an awful lot like Vinland Saga 💀 Specifically the first season (second season actually takes it the complete opposite direction, but is good in it's own way). Been meaning to watch Northman at some point, because I do enjoy that kind of styles where you are just thrown into the world and it just is; it doesn't feel "alien" to me, just different.

The whole thing with wyrd reminds me of the actual meaning of karma. Karma isn't just the universe making you pay for what you did, I think it means 'to act', as in your actions are setting forth the eventual outcome. How you rise to meet things is your karma. In wyrd, you create your fate.
