I hate to say that but my aunt Carmella did this she actually believed that as long as she had checks she could write any amount she wanted she couldn't understand that if there's no money in the account she could not write any checks ...and my mom believed that even though she had checks she good feel right check on account that was closed so yeah both my aunt and my mother had to pay back those checks that they wrote or go to jail thank God the da allowed them to set up a payment system to pay everything back they were never allowed to have a checking account ever again

I worked as a legal secretary in the banking industry for 40 years. Before ATM cards and online banking became common, we had a problem with an elderly customer who would call his local branch to confirm his balance before writing a check. He didn't understand that he might have outstanding checks that hadn't cleared and that the balance wasn't necessarily correct. He had countless checks bounce and would complain to the bank and to various consumer advocate agencies. When he would call to ask for his balance, the branch staff would explain that the balance might not be absolutely current and that he needed to maintain a balance in his checkbook. We threatened to close his account. He finally started going to the branch and buying money orders yo pay his bills.
