The local Black African response to Adventism was complex and far from uniform, involving both enthusiastic acceptance and deep-seated cultural conflict. In some areas, the desire for Western education, independent of European missionary control, was a powerful draw that attracted people to the new faith. Furthermore, literature played a surprising role; in Ghana, a man named Francis Dolphijn was converted in 1888 simply by reading Adventist materials given to him by a visiting ship captain, and he went on to become the first indigenous missionary. However, missionaries often failed to understand or respect African traditions, viewing them with suspicion. This led to significant friction, particularly regarding cultural practices like initiation rites, marriage customs, and death rituals, which the Adventist church condemned. For example, the initial response among the Abagusii people in Western Kenya was "generally negative" due to this cultural clash. Despite these setbacks, the church grew through the grassroots efforts of local teachers and converts who adapted the faith to their own realities, a process of "indigenization" that was often uneven and driven from the bottom up.
