Mind you neither the DSM-5 nor the ICD-11 have that word in it anymore, and if you’re in the US Rosa’s law was passed nearly 16 years ago, meaning there’s absolutely no reason for it to still be in there.

Oh my lord. Mental retardation was the previous name for intellectual disability in the DSM 3. It is a medical term, not an insult. It’s an outdated form not an attack on your daughter

Just because it’s a medical term doesn’t mean it’s right there’s many other words you can use besides that!

Unfortunately that is still the correct term you crossed out. A disability would also include Autism, ADHD, PTSD, Bipolar and some personality disorders. You can always be more specific and put the actual diagnosis.

cognitively disabled is the proper term, there was absolutely no reason for the kind of outdated and offensive term to be used now

For those saying it’s a medical term it’s not anymore and it’s disappointing that your comfortable saying that when it’s hasn’t been used in medical practices in almost a decade (ICD-11 2018) and longer in some cases (Rosa’s Law 2010) medical professionals use intellectual disability or intellectual developmental disorder please be kind to others

It’s no longer a medical term, but it isn’t replaced by “mental disability”. It was replaced by “intellectual disability”. Those are two separate things clinically

report it to their practice and the medical board. it's unacceptable to be using such outdated, offensive terminology.

so. just an fyi. it's not ILLEGAL. it's outdated. it has been replaced with the term Intellectually Disabled. but you may still see it on outdated forms, in dra offices with older physicians. no one is going to get arrested or penalized for using the term , it's just deemed as unprofessional and inappropriate.
