The name comes not from flowers or scenery, but from the brightly colored climbing suits of mountaineers who never made it home. One of the valley's most well known stories is that of Francys Arsentiev, remembered around the world as "Sleeping Beauty of Everest." In 1998, she became the first American woman to summit Everest without supplemental oxygen, but tragically died during her descent after suffering from exhaustion and severe oxygen deprivation. Her husband, Sergei Arsentiev, descended to obtain oxygen and returned in an attempt to rescue her. He also lost his life on the mountain. Other climbers tried to help Francys, but at such extreme altitude a rescue was beyond human capability without putting more lives at risk. Because Francys' body appeared to be peacefully resting on the mountainside, climbers began calling her "Sleeping Beauty." Her body remained visible for nearly nine years before a special expedition moved her away from the climbing route in 2007, giving her a more dignified resting place. Mountaineering experts say the Death Zone remains one of the most dangerous environments on Earth. Oxygen levels are only about one third of those at sea level, and rescuing an incapacitated climber often becomes nearly impossible. As a result, many bodies remain on the mountain for years. Today, the story of Sleeping Beauty is remembered not to sensationalize tragedy, but to remind climbers that reaching the summit is only half the journey.
