I don’t know about this take. Some of us are knowledge creators and built chatbots as far back as 2018. I even worked at Bing for a decade. Many laugh but OpenAI indexes Bing for a lot of its results because Google is a closed system. I think these companies have lost the plot by inviting a bunch of influencers who barely have experience and using them as a smokescreen to protect their poor corporate reputations. We don’t have journalists anymore to ask the hard questions and check absolute power. We can enjoy technology without worshipping it.

this isn't just abt AI "PR" - AI has real negative ramifications on the environment, employment, etc

But the backlash is coming from tech savvy consumers on TikTok, from people who have used ChatGPT for personal use or Claude to build things. Not random boomers who get info from their bosses’ boss at work.

💯. That is exactly the type of content I published when I managed social channels for a tech company focused on AI Skills. Bridging the gap and sharing practical use cases available to all is so important.

Wrong. It's the AI leaders that are destroying their own reputation

I don’t disagree but consumers aren’t that interested in learning about it - they’re certainly not reading a white paper

I think we can all understand that very real risks with AI - think hacked power grids, nukes, banks etc. What we have not seen any good articulation is how any of it benefits us. It’s all downside with zero clear upside. Me being a biotech guy who gets annoyed af when I can’t connect to WiFi.

Can we be frank? Silicon valley doesnt even know good use cases for AI. A lot of this is tech dudes playing with their sh*t and loving the smell, getting hyped up on its fumes thinking it will render god out of a data center. It's the product of people who dont ever catch a ride 10-50 miles south, where they can inhale an ocean breeze and realize whose really god.

White papers? Lord. The problem is that its technology in search of a product. I use it for coding because I wanted my own bespoke software. But not many people have the time or effort to learn how to do all that. It’s simply not improving most peoples day to day lives and while threatening their jobs.

In my experience, if you have to cajole someone, they probably don’t need it. I’ve used and experimented with LLMs since 2017 so I’m probably an earlier adopter than 99% of people in the room. The tools aren’t for everyone and that’s ok. Let people decide for themselves how to adopt the tech, and which problems to apply it to. Management will fuck it up.

Tech is infinitely bad at this. Same thing happened with crypto. There’s a really bad obsession with status and success projection rather than educating lay people. Which is really the move for all this.

Winning strategy is always being transparent about how things work who they actually impact and the lives they change. Then people can make an informed decision on if and how they utilize the tools. There’s such a loss of respect for humans who are capable of critical thinking in that world.

Exactly!!!! That’s exactly what I’ve pivoted content into: showing how ai actually helps people outside of Silicon Valley and making it less scary. Plus tons of vibecoding from a non technical pov 👀 Claude was doing a good job with their influencer marketing imo

I see only one solution - most people need to self employ in the age of AI. That way they can reap the benefits of AI for themselves rather than their increased productivity being siphoned off to a corporation they work for. Also the data center issue will be solved by local LLMs. Tell them. 🤘

like you said, AI should be for code only. OpenAI is not doing that and that's why there's so much backlash

To be blunt, silicon valley is an island. It’s not the real world. “How it can change my life” is only true there.
