Be careful about the words you speak every day. Some Christians pray for change in their lives, yet fail to realize that their own words are steadily tearing them down. The Bible says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” (Proverbs 18:21 KJV) Today, let’s examine three ways we often speak. First, always doubting yourself. “I can’t do it.” “I’ll never change.” These words don’t determine your destiny, but if repeated daily, they slowly steal your faith, leave you discouraged, and make you unwilling to try. Don’t just say, “I can’t.” Instead, say, “Lord, I feel weak now. Please guide me to keep moving forward.” Second, constant complaining and anger. Some people lash out when things go wrong, complain, shout, or even speak hurtful words to those closest to them. The Bible tells us, “The tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity.” (James 3:6 KJV) A moment of anger can leave wounds in someone’s heart for years. So when you feel anger rising, pause. Don’t rush to prove yourself right. Pray first. Be quiet first. Ask God to manage your heart. Third, using words to harm others. Sarcasm, shame, cursing, or malicious speech may give temporary satisfaction, but they destroy relationships and reveal hidden issues in your heart. “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying.” (Ephesians 4:29 KJV) This doesn’t mean saying empty compliments. Even when correcting or confronting, speak with honesty, self-control, and love. The real change isn’t just in your speech, it’s in your heart. Whatever fills your heart will eventually come out of your mouth. Pray that God first cleanses your heart, then guides your tongue, so your words no longer sin but encourage, comfort, and build others. If you want to learn how to manage your emotions and words according to God’s Word, and establish a genuine life of faith, join our online Bible study group.
