Things like this happen more often than you think. People that have pulled over because of flat tires or cars stalled and someone standing behind their vehicle either pushing it out of lane of traffic or getting equipment to change out the flat tire. Someone usually drunk slamming their vehicle into that person behind their car and lots of times having their lower half body amputated! Some die from extreme loss of blood and trauma. I worked for a police department that handled all serious injuries or fatalities involving vehicles.

On April 9, 2024, Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy Julian Garcia conducted a traffic stop in Islamorada, Florida, pulling over 20-year-old Andrew James Gibson of Homestead, Florida, who had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court. While Deputy Garcia was at the scene, a 2014 Toyota Prius crashed into the back of his parked patrol cruiser, launching it into Gibson’s vehicle and pinning Deputy Garcia between them. * Deputy Julian Garcia: Suffered severe injuries that ultimately required the amputation of his left leg below the knee. * Andrew James Gibson: Sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was treated at Mariners Hospital, and was subsequently jailed on his outstanding warrant. * Alexandra Marlene Baraga: The 26-year-old driver of the Prius was uninjured. Her breathalyzer test registered a blood-alcohol content of 0.310—nearly four times Florida’s legal limit. She was arrested at the scene and charged with multiple offenses, including DUI causing serious bodily injury. Baraga posted a $95,000 bond shortly after her arrest, and the criminal case, along with related civil lawsuits, proceeded through the Monroe County court system.
