Add in the destruction of its agricultural sector in the 1990s through foreign trade mandates, and the modern displacement of Haitian people becomes impossible to separate from the actions of Western powers. Now, as Temporary Protected Status ends and Haitian immigrants face GPS tracking monitors and criminalization at the U.S. border, the history is quietly erased. We enforce shackles on the victims of the very instability we helped create the ultimate cognitive dissonance of Western foreign policy. Haitians aren't criminals for wanting to survive.
