Human settlements have existed there since prehistoric times, and numerous ancient fortresses, churches, monasteries, towers, and archaeological sites can still be found across the mountains and valleys. Many of these monuments reflect the long and complex history of the peoples who have lived in the region. Today, the Caucasus continues to be an important cultural and geographical region, known for its spectacular natural scenery, diverse peoples, historical heritage, and strategic position between Europe and Asia.
