Can you hear them whisper? 👂 Ear mite infestations are highly contagious, be sure to check the ears of your cats and dogs! These mites are nothing like what I’ve seen before, they have these long hair attached to their back legs which kinda look like the train of a wedding dress? 😂 very romantic. Who knows These long hair are called setae and help the mites attach themselves to the lining of the ear canal. This way, these microscopic parasites can easily snack on skin, oils, wax, and debris without being dislodged from your pet’s ears! They usually don’t burrow into the skin, but they can pierce it to feed on blood, serum or lymph. Most cats and dogs get infected by a species known as Otodectes cynotis, which is the species you can observe in this video! This same species is known to infect other carnivores such as foxes, ferrets, and raccoons. Humans can also get infected by Otodectes cynotis, the same species of ear mites, but it’s an extremely rare phenomenon. As a result of Otodectes mite infestation in cats or dogs, there will be a dark black-brown crumbly material in the ears of your pet as well as hypersensitivity, inflammation, and itchiness. Mite infections can sometimes result in otitis or secondary bacteria infections. Otodectes cynotis has a lifecycle of 4 stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. I could see tons of little white eggs in the sample the pet shelter gave to me as well as adults. The whole lifecycle happens within the ear canal, but you can sometimes find adults roaming around the ears and on the skin surface. It takes around 3 to 4 weeks for the lifecycle to be completed, so from egg to adult. Even if ear mites are highly contagious and distributed worldwide, there are treatments your veterinarian can prescribe to you pet! Medications can either be administered topically or systemically.
