There are three ways Americans respond when you criticize their country, and the third one is holding the whole nation back. I am back in the United States, and this pattern is stronger here than in most countries I have lived in. Say something mildly critical, that the pizza in Italy is better, and you get one of three reactions. The first person asks questions. What makes it better? Show me. They take in the information and decide for themselves. This is how thinking works. The second agrees with everything you say. They either want something from you or hold no position of their own. The third hears one critical word and calls you anti-American. You hate the country. You should leave. In my experience this reaction comes almost entirely from MAGA Republicans, and it is the real problem, because finding weak points is how anything improves. A teacher marks what a student got wrong so the student can learn. A company gives workers feedback so they get better. Citizens criticize their leaders so problems get fixed. A country that treats every criticism as an attack shuts down the one process that makes it stronger. The belief underneath it is that America is already the greatest country on earth, so nothing needs fixing. That belief feels like loyalty, but it stops the country from improving.
