Meet Namasole Abisagi Baagalayaze my great grandmother x4 one of the most prominent queen mothers in the history of the Buganda Kingdom, who belonged to the Ngonge (Otter) clan. She was also the wife of Kabaka Muteesa l and the biological mother of Kabaka Mwanga II, and held the highly influential title of Namasole (Queen Mother). Let’s Get into her story…… Sorry before we start, let’s first look at how she got the name Baagalayaze Namasole Abisagi Nakatya acquired the name Baagalayaze (derived from the Luganda phrase "ayagala abazze") due to her welcoming, progressive nature and her role in inviting foreign missionaries and teachers to the Buganda Kingdom. Now let’s look at the historic letter, The Historic Letter: On April 14, 1875, Namasole Baagalayaze assisted her husband, Kabaka Mutesa I, in writing a historic letter to Queen Victoria of England. The letter formally requested that Great Britain send teachers and religious missionaries to Buganda. The Luganda Meaning: Because Namasole Baagalayaze championed the arrival of these foreign guests, people began referring to her as "ayagala abazze," which translates closely to "she loves/welcomes those who have arrived". Over time, this praise evolved into the title and name Baagalayaze. Now let’s take a look at her legacy. Looking at her legacy: Historically, she is remembered as a kind-hearted, hardworking, and deeply generous leader. Who spent the rest of her life honoring the name given to her through immense generosity. To foster modern development, she personally donated large plots of her own land to construct Anglican churches, Catholic churches, and Islamic mosques. She also provided land and funding to build two local schools, a community hospital, and early brick-making enterprises. And to end the story: Namasole Baagalayaze passed away in 1916, outliving her exiled son by 13 years. The Tombs: She was laid to rest at the Namasole Baagalayaze Tombs in Mpererwe (Sekati), approximately 10 kilometers north of Kampala. Cultural Belief: when looking at cultural beliefs in Buganda, royal tradition dictates that a Queen Mother never truly "dies" but rather "disappears into the forest," which is why the tomb area is preserved as a living heritage site rather than just a cemetery.
