For more than 400 years, even Johannes Kepler and Isaac Newton could not solve this problem. In 2016, Ukrainian mathematician Maryna Vyazovska made a breakthrough. She solved this problem not for the familiar three-dimensional world, but for eight-dimensional space. The most astonishing proof took up only 23 pages. For this discovery, Vyazovskaya received the Fields Medal, the highest honor in mathematics. And this isn't just a nice theory. It's precisely this kind of research that helps improve data transmission, create error-correcting codes, and make space communications more reliable.
