There is WAY more happening with coffee at UC Davis than we realized. ☕️🐮 We knew UC Davis had the Coffee Center, but what really caught our attention was finding out students are actually roasting and selling their own coffee there. The Coffee Academic Forum, or CAF, is a student run organization where students can get hands on experience selecting beans, roasting, packaging, and learning about coffee beyond what most of us experience when we order a cup in the morning. And the Coffee Center itself is pretty wild. It's the first academic center in the country dedicated specifically to coffee science and research. Researchers and students there can study everything from roasting and brewing to chemistry, sensory science, production, and even developing new coffee products. Coffee has even made its way into the classroom. UC Davis offers courses like Design of Coffee, which teaches more than 2,000 students a year, along with classes exploring coffee culture and the science behind what ends up in your cup. But here's the part we think more people around Davis should know about: you can actually support the students doing this work. CAF opens up to the public on Thursdays from 9am to 12pm, with coffee that's selected, roasted, and packaged by students right there at UC Davis. They have their regular Biker's Blend and Cheeto's Classic, plus a rotating single origin coffee that gives them a chance to work with different beans and roasting profiles. You can even sample some of the coffee before deciding what to bring home. We spend a lot of time talking about UC Davis agriculture, wine, animals, and food science, but coffee is another one of those things happening on campus that we had no idea went this deep. And buying a bag of coffee roasted by UC Davis students feels like a pretty Davis way to start your morning. 😂☕️
