Short answer: it’s a terrible gift. Long answer spending lots of money is a sign of dedication imo. Sure if you’re not rich then you can’t obviously spend a lot of money, but you’ll do your best to still give a good gift not a 12$ one. Doesn’t matter if your SO gave you a chocolate bar as a gift, you’re responsible for yourself and if you care about your SO you’re going to spend money on a good gift.

listening to this sounds so similar to me and my partner, her birthday is first then our anniversary. This is making me think what I would get her and it sounds like a decent gift I would give, but not as birthday present. I think it is very sweet that he thought of her when it came to the necklace and it represented their culture. It may be cheap but the thought of it is expensive. Based off what you are saying how he can spend money and gf spent $70 on him, its her birthday, I think there should be a second gift

only if the necklace was of a cheap quality, like if you managed to get some one a gift that was worth say $1000, but you managed to find that exact same(not a knockoff) item for 12 dollars, sheeeit, who doesn't like a partner that's financially savvy. But also regardless of price the gift should always be something the partner actually wants or that you know they will find genuine enjoyment from, additionally even if both the anniversary and birthday fall on the same day that's two separate gifts for two separate reasons minimum,

This depends if the girl cares more about the price of the gift or the thought. Especially being it’s apart of her culture. Of course I personally would’ve made a whole event out the couple of days then got her something that’s probably more than $12. But I can see how she might think he wasn’t thoughtful and found something cheap at the last minute. Intentions is everything here 😂

Second: if the person could afford to give you something high-quality but didn't because they didn't want to spend the money, that’s wrong; however, if they chose the gift specifically because they remembered something you liked, the price doesn't matter. sounds like the gift was not thought about and picked up last minute. I do it to my parents a lot. I'm not good at picking gifts for people and it bugs me they always end up leaving it on a counter or something untouched for years and years anyway
