@talhaghannam: Surah Names: Al-Qalam: A Curriculum for Education Why did Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala choose specific names for each Surah? Because the name often reveals a hidden theme that gathers the verses together. Take Surah al-Qalam, "The Pen." Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala opens the surah by saying: Now, many would say that Surat al-Qalam, "The Pen," is named al-Qalam because the word is mentioned at the beginning of the surah. Sure. But other surahs mention the word qalam too, like Surat al-A'la: "The One who taught by the qalam, the pen." So why did this surah take the name al-Qalam, but not the other surah, which is al-'Alaq? Because Surat al-Qalam is not just mentioning a pen. It's building a theme around what it represents: learning, knowledge, and transformation. The name of the surah is indicating this theme. Just follow the language of the surah. First, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala mentions the word Nun, a word which also means inkpot. However, mysteriously, it's written as a single letter. A letter that also looks like the inkpot that it means. Then al-Qalam, the pen, the great symbol of education. Then wa ma yasturun, and what they write. So from the very beginning, you have the tools of knowledge: ink, pen, writing. Now you have recitation, a cornerstone of learning, and the mention of revelation, ayat, where knowledge truly comes from. The verses, ayat, become a book, Kitab, where knowledge is gathered. Why? To study, learn. Then the surah speaks of sight. The surah name is not just a title. It's a whole message. And what is all this knowledge for? It's there at the beginning of the surah: "And you, O Rasul Allah, are truly a man of outstanding character." Good character is the essence of knowledge because without it, knowledge becomes humiliation when you don't practice what you preach. Surat al-Qalam teaches us that true knowledge is not what you know.
