@charleybournetruecrime: The Terrifying Case Of Mary Reeser 💔 In 1951 in St Petersburg, Florida, a woman showed up to visit one of her tenants. This was Mary Reeser - a 67 year old widow. The house was eerily silent and the door handle was boiling hot. The emergency services raced over to the scene and found a horrifying sight. Mary had been cremated - apart from one foot. Her charred remains lay across the room. But this was NOT a normal fire. Her foot still had the slipper on and was weirdly.. unharmed? The fire department and police were stumped.. was this a crime scene? Or an unexplained unsolved mystery? Authorities even got the F.B.I involved but the FBI theory didn’t make sense either. And things got even more baffling when scientists and fire researchers got involved. They said it would’ve taken 3 or 4 hours of constant intense burning at roughly 2,500 degrees to do that damage. Some people argue that Mary spontaneously combusted. This is when someone sets on fire due to something internally.. I heard about spontaneous human combustion when I was young and I thought this was a terrifying made up horror story when I was little.. thank god I never found out it was true.. #truecrime #crimetok #crimestory #crime true crime story charleybournetruecrime

The photo of Mary’s “remains” was my first step into the dark and macabre. I was I think 3 when I stumbled upon it in a book. Not a proper book, maybe a magazine? I remember it being smaller than a typical magazine, and Mary’s foot is the only picture I remember from it.

couldn't she just have been murdered and her ashes dumped there but why was the door handle hot and if it was combustion other things would has set fire surely?

My dad had a Reader’s Digest book that had a section on spontaneous human combustion, complete with photos. I read it repeatedly when I was far too young Also an interesting bit on the Cottingley Fairies. I’d love to find a copy again.

spontaneous human combustion has been disproven, usually the fire comes from something like a cigarette and what's actually happening is called the wick effect. they're always on an armchair or something porous - fat melts and get absorbed into it which keeps the fire burning for longer, it also isolates the flames since it's a fuel and can get stronger in one place instead of spreading to other less flammable tings around the site - kind of like a candle where only the wick is burning even though wax is flammable.
