🍔 The Great Onion Burger Rivalry - El Reno, Oklahoma El Reno’s onion burger was born out of necessity. During the Great Depression, beef was expensive and onions were cheap, so local cooks started stretching their meat by smashing a thin patty into a pile of shaved onions on the flat-top griddle. The onions cooked down into the beef, adding moisture, sweetness, and volume — and a legend was born. The credit for inventing it goes to Hamburger Inn, back in the 1920s, but the real story is about what happened next: three family-run joints — Sid’s Diner, Johnnie’s Grill, and Robert’s Grill — all sprang up along or near Route 66 in El Reno, each claiming the truest, best version of the burger. Locals have their fierce loyalties, and the friendly rivalry has simmered for nearly a century. Every May, the town leans into it with Fried Onion Burger Day, a festival featuring a burger cooked in a skillet reportedly large enough to feed thousands, plus live music, car shows, and a genuine hometown pride that Route 66 travelers still detour for.
