Driving with the pickup truck tailgate up is more fuel-efficient and aerodynamic than driving with it down.
Contrary to the common belief that an open tailgate reduces drag, keeping the tailgate closed creates a "separated bubble" or vortex of slow-moving air in the truck bed. This air pocket acts like an invisible cover, deflecting wind over the tailgate and reducing overall vehicle drag.
When the tailgate is lowered, this aerodynamic bubble is destroyed, causing turbulent air to be sucked into the bed and increasing drag. This effect has been confirmed by wind tunnel testing from manufacturers like GM and Ford, as well as by the TV show MythBusters, which found that the tailgate-up configuration allowed a truck to travel significantly further on the same amount of fuel.
