@_notkey.y: There were many things Miu was willing to do for a passing grade. She could wake up before sunrise, survive an entire day on three hours of sleep, memorize a presentation the night before, and even pretend to understand a professor's explanation when she had, in fact, understood absolutely nothing. She could do group work, despite her firm belief that group work had been invented to test a person's patience rather than their academic ability. She could even perform in front of the class if absolutely necessary. But dancing? No. Dancing was where Miu drew the line. Unfortunately, the university had never asked for her opinion. "Okay, everyone. Before you leave, I'll announce your next performance activity." The moment their professor said those words, Miu slowly lowered the pen she had been using to doodle in the corner of her notebook. Around her, the classroom came alive with the usual groans and complaints. Someone at the back immediately whispered that they were going to fail. Another student asked if they could submit a written report instead. Miu silently agreed with all of them. She had already had enough presentations for one semester. Their professor continued explaining the activity, dividing the class into smaller groups and assigning each one a different performance category. Some groups would handle spoken poetry. Others would prepare a short skit or musical presentation. Miu listened with half interest until their group was called. "Group Three. Dance." Her stomach dropped at what she heard. Miu looked at Orm only to see her friend already looking at her. For several seconds, neither of them spoke. Then Orm slowly smiled toward her with the kind of sympathy normally reserved for someone who had just received terrible news. "Miu." "No." "I haven't said anything yet." "You don't have to." Orm pressed her lips together, obviously trying not to laugh. Miu stared at the professor as if there was still a chance that the woman would suddenly realize her mistake, apologize, and announce that Group Three had actually been assigned spoken poetry…that didn't happen. Instead, the professor continued discussing the requirements, the number of members, and the date of their first performance. Miu wrote everything down with the solemn expression of someone recording the details of her own impending execution. By the time class ended, she had already accepted her fate. She was going to embarrass herself. There was no other possible ending. "You know, you could always try." Orm said as they packed their things. Miu gave her a look. "I am trying." "You haven't even danced yet." "Exactly. I'm already trying not to." Orm laughed as they walked out of the classroom together. Miu wasn't being dramatic. She really couldn't dance. She had tried before, although calling it dancing might have been generous. Whenever music started playing, her brain seemed to understand the rhythm perfectly well. Unfortunately, the information never reached the rest of her body. Her feet moved too early, then too late. Sometimes they moved in completely different directions. Once, during a friend's birthday party, she had accidentally kicked a chair while attempting what she had thought was a very simple step. The chair had survived, her dignity had not. So when Orm reminded her that they had to start practicing soon, Miu could already feel a headache forming. There was, however, one person who might be able to help. And unfortunately for Miu, that person happened to be her girlfriend. ——— Lena was waiting outside Miu’s building that afternoon, leaning against one of the pillars with her bag hanging from one shoulder. She was easy to recognize even from a distance. Part of it was because Lena was beautiful in the effortless way that made people look twice without meaning to. But mostly, it was because almost everyone on campus knew her. She is the center of the university dance troupe after all. —CONTINUATION🔽— #lenamiu #lenalalina #miunatsha #oneshot #fyp

1️⃣ She performed during school events, represented the university in competitions, and somehow managed to make even the simplest dance routine look like something worth watching.
Miu, on the other hand, could barely walk in a straight line while texting.
The contrast had always amused her.
It was also one of the reasons Miu had fallen in love with her.
That, and the fact that beneath all the attention Lena received, she was still just Lena when they were alone.
The girl who stole Miu's fries without asking.
The girl who complained when Miu took too long to reply to her messages.
The girl who always remembered when Miu had an exam, even when Miu herself forgot.
And, most importantly, the girl who never made Miu feel like she had to compete with the rest of the world for her attention.
They had been together for long enough that their relationship had settled into something comfortable. Neither of them needed to constantly say they loved each other. Sometimes it was enough for Lena to reach for Miu's hand underneath the table, where nobody could see.
They had never officially announced their relationship.
There had been no grand confession in front of their friends, no photograph posted online, no dramatic declaration that would make everyone gasp.
It had simply happened.
Somewhere between late night conversations and shared meals, between waiting for each other after class and falling asleep during phone calls, Lena had kissed her one evening and asked if she could be her girlfriend.
Miu had said yes.
That was it.
To everyone else, they were best friends.
Very close best friends.
Suspiciously close best friends, according to Orm.
But still best friends.
Miu walked toward Lena, already preparing herself to complain.
—
Lena noticed her immediately and smiled.
"Hi."
Miu stopped in front of her.
"Don't say hi."
Lena's smile widened.
"Okay. Hello."
"I said don't."
"Good afternoon?"
"Lena."
That finally made Lena laugh.
She reached for Miu's hand but stopped halfway when a group of students walked past them. Miu noticed the movement and smiled.
That was another thing about their relationship.

4️⃣ Lena blinked at the question.
"Teaching?"
Miu looked at Orm again.
Orm suddenly became very interested in her phone.
"You asked Lena?"
"I did."
"And she agreed?"
Lena answered this time.
"Of course I agreed."
Miu stared at her girlfriend in disbelief.
"You knew?"
Lena frowned.
"That you were in this group?"
"Yes."
"I didn't know until Orm asked me."
Miu's eyes narrowed.
"And you said yes?"
Lena's expression softened.
"Why wouldn't I?"
‘Because you're my girlfriend’ Miu thought.
‘Because you know I can't dance.’
‘Because you promised to help me.’
‘Because I thought you were going to be supportive, not personally witness my public humiliation.’
Instead, she said, "Nothing."
Lena smiled.
"Good."
Miu forced a smile back.
Around them, their classmates were already gathering, completely unaware of the silent argument happening between the two girls.
Orm clapped her hands.
"Okay, everyone! Let's start."
Miu took a deep breath.
This was fine.
It was completely fine.
Her girlfriend was going to teach her how to dance.
How bad could it possibly be?
——
The first practice lasted exactly ten minutes before Miu began questioning every decision that had led her to that room.
It wasn't because the choreography was difficult. At least, not yet. Lena had barely taught them eight counts, and Miu was already struggling to keep up.
"Right foot first." Lena said, standing in front of the group.
Miu looked down at her feet as if they might somehow provide the answer.
"Right."
"Yes."
Miu moved.
Lena watched for a second before stopping her. "That's your left."
Miu looked down again. There were, in fact, two feet attached to her legs.
She pointed at one of them. "This one?"
"That's your left."
"And this?"
"Right."
"Okay."
Miu nodded with the confidence of someone who had finally solved a complicated problem.
Lena restarted the music.
"Five, six, seven, eight."
Miu stepped forward with her right foot, remembered the next movement, turned slightly too early, and walked directly into Orm.
"Ow!"
"Sorry!"
Orm grabbed her shoulder to steady herself. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. I think."
Lena stopped the music.
Miu could already feel everyone looking at her.
"Again." Lena said.

2️⃣ They had become experts at knowing when they could be themselves and when they had to pretend.
Once the students were gone, Lena lightly bumped her shoulder against Miu's.
"What happened?"
Miu sighed.
"I have a performance activity."
Lena's expression immediately brightened.
"That's exciting."
"No, it isn't."
"It is."
"For you, maybe."
Lena looked at her curiously. "What happened?"
"They assigned our group dance."
There was a pause, then Lena smiled again.
Miu narrowed her eyes.
"Don't."
"I didn't say anything."
"Your face did."
Lena tried to hide her smile and failed.
Miu crossed her arms.
"I can't dance."
"You can learn."
"I have two left feet."
"Then we'll teach your feet which one is which."
Miu stared at her.
"We?"
Lena shrugged as if the answer were obvious.
"You'll be fine."
There was something about the confidence in Lena's voice that made Miu's frustration soften.
She knew Lena wasn't teasing her.
That was simply how Lena was. When she believed someone could do something, she didn't waste time listing all the reasons they might fail.
Miu looked down at their shoes.
"What if I embarrass myself?"
"You won't."
"What if I forget the steps?"
"You'll practice."
"What if everyone laughs at me?"
"They won't."
"What if I fall?"
"Then I'll catch you."
Miu looked up and saw Lena smiling at her now, softer than before.
For a moment, the noise of the campus seemed to fade into the background.
Miu felt the familiar warmth settle in her chest.
She hated how easily Lena could do that.
One sentence.
One look.
And suddenly the thing that had been terrifying her five minutes ago didn't seem quite as impossible.
"You make everything sound easy." Miu muttered.
"That's because you're worrying too much."
"I have a right to worry."
"You do."
"Thank you."
"But you're still going to be okay."
Miu rolled her eyes, though she was smiling now.
"Fine."
Lena leaned closer.
"That's my girl."
Miu immediately looked around.
"Lena!"
"What?"
"People."
Lena laughed under her breath and stepped back.
"Sorry."
"You aren't."
"No."
Miu shook her head.
She should have known better than to expect Lena to take her complaints seriously.

3️⃣ Still, as they walked across campus together, Miu felt a little less afraid of the performance.
She has Lena after all.
That thought would later prove to be both comforting and deeply unfortunate.
——
The first practice was scheduled three days later.
Miu spent most of those three days avoiding the subject.
She told herself there was no reason to panic yet. They hadn't even chosen the music. They hadn't even decided what kind of dance they were going to perform.
There was still plenty of time before she had to humiliate herself.
So she tried not to think about it.
Unfortunately, Orm thought about it enough for both of them.
"Have you found someone to teach us yet?" Miu asked as they walked toward the rehearsal room.
Orm nodded.
"Actually, yes."
Miu relaxed slightly.
"Good."
"I asked someone yesterday."
"Who?"
Orm's mouth curved into a suspicious smile.
"You'll find out."
Miu stopped walking.
"Why are you smiling like that?"
"I'm not."
"You are."
"I think you're imagining things."
Miu stared at her.
Orm simply continued walking.
Miu followed, still suspicious.
The rehearsal room was already occupied by some of their classmates when they arrived. Bags were scattered across the floor, water bottles lined the wall, and someone was struggling to connect a phone to the speaker.
Miu set her things down and looked around.
"Where's the person you asked?"
Orm checked her phone.
"She's on her way."
"Does she know how to dance?"
Orm looked offended.
"Of course."
Miu nodded.
That was good. A professional dancer would probably be patient with her.
Someone who understood that not everyone had the same natural ability.
Someone who wouldn't laugh when she inevitably moved in the wrong direction.
The door opened again.
Miu glanced toward it and immediately froze.
Lena walked into the room carrying her dance bag. She looked completely at ease, as if she hadn't just walked directly into Miu's worst nightmare.
Their eyes met and Lena immediately let out a wide smile.
Miu stared at her, then she looked at Orm, then back at Lena.
"No."
Orm bit her lip.
"Miu-"
"You did not."
Lena stopped in front of them.
"Hi."
Miu lowered her voice.
"What are you doing here?!"

5️⃣ Miu stared at her. "Already?"
"We've only done it twice."
"I thought you were going to give us a break."
"You walked into Orm."
"Exactly. I need a break."
A few of their classmates laughed, and even Lena had to turn away for a moment to hide her smile.
Miu caught it.
"You laughed."
"I didn't."
"You did."
"I smiled."
"That's worse."
Lena faced the group again, still trying to look serious. "Let's just take it slowly. Nobody needs to do the entire routine yet. We need to get the basic steps down first."
That sounded reasonable and Miu appreciated reasonable.
Unfortunately, Lena's definition of "slowly" was apparently different from hers.
They tried again.
And again.
And again.
By the fifth attempt, everyone else had managed to memorize the first section. Miu, meanwhile, had developed her own version of the choreography, which seemed to involve taking one step behind everyone else and then desperately trying to catch up.
"You're rushing." Lena told her.
"I'm trying to keep up."
"You're rushing because you're trying to keep up."
"That's what I just said."
"No, you're supposed to listen to the count instead of watching everyone else."
"I am listening."
"Then why are you moving before the count?"
Miu opened her mouth, then closed it.
She didn't have an answer.
Lena folded her arms. "Again."
Miu looked at Orm.
"Is she always like this?"
Orm shrugged. "Well, she’s the center of the university’s dance troupe."
"She's terrifying."
"I heard that."
"You were supposed to."
Lena shook her head, but the corner of her mouth lifted before she started the music again.
The next attempt went slightly better. Miu still missed a step, but this time she managed to recover without crashing into anyone.
Lena noticed.
"Good."
Miu looked at her.
"Good?"
"You recovered."
Miu smiled despite herself. "See? I'm improving."
"You are."
"Then you can stop looking at me like I'm a disappointment."
"I don't look at you like that."
"You do."
"I really don't."
Miu pointed at her. "That face."
"What face?"
"That dance troupe face."
Lena laughed. "I don't have a dance troupe face."
"You absolutely do."
"What's a dance troupe face?"

7️⃣ She had watched her during rehearsals and performances, watched the way people naturally listened whenever she spoke about dancing. There was something different about seeing it up close. Lena wasn't simply good at dancing. She cared about getting it right, and she cared about making sure everyone else understood it too.
Miu smiled.
"You really like this."
Lena looked over. "What?"
"Dancing."
"I do."
"I can tell."
Lena walked back toward her. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"I'm thinking."
"That's dangerous."
Miu rolled her eyes. "I'm serious."
"Is there something wrong?"
"No. It’s just that you look different when you're teaching."
Lena sat down beside her. "Different how?"
"More serious. More confident."
"Is that a bad thing?"
"No." Miu glanced at her. "It's just weird seeing you boss people around."
"I'm not bossing anyone around."
"You told Orm to do the same step six times."
"Because she kept doing it wrong."
"Exactly."
Lena smiled. "And you think you're any different?"
Miu looked offended.
"I'm a fast learner."
"You walked into Orm."
"That was earlier."
"And you stepped on your own foot."
"That was also earlier."
"And you forgot which foot was your right."
Miu turned toward her. "Why do you remember everything I've done wrong?"
"Because there have been a lot."
Miu pushed her shoulder.
Lena laughed and caught her hand before she could do it again.
For a moment, neither of them said anything. Lena's fingers stayed loosely around Miu's hand, hidden between them where nobody across the room could see.
"You'll be okay." Lena said.
Miu looked at their hands before meeting her eyes.
"I know."

6️⃣ Miu tried to imitate her, straightening her posture and narrowing her eyes. "The one that says, 'Everyone here is embarrassing me, and I don't know why I agreed to this.'"
The room broke into laughter.
Lena stared at her for a moment before shaking her head.
"You've been watching me too much."
"I'm your girl. I'm supposed to watch you."
The words slipped out before Miu could stop them.
The laughter around them continued, and nobody seemed to hear what Miu just said.
But Lena did.
For half a second, her expression changed.
Then she calmly picked up the remote for the speaker.
"Right. Again."
Miu smiled to herself.
That was one of the little things about being with Lena. They had become so used to each other that sometimes the fact they were supposed to be pretending to be nothing more than friends became surprisingly easy to forget.
——
They continued practicing until Miu's shirt was sticking slightly to her back and her water bottle was almost empty.
She had improved, technically.
She could now complete the first section without running into anyone, although Lena had informed her that "not hurting other people" was a rather low standard for a dance performance.
Miu disagreed.
"It is an important standard."
"It is the bare minimum."
"I think we should celebrate small victories."
Lena handed her the water bottle she had left near the speaker. "Drink."
Miu took it and sat down against the wall.
"I don't know why people enjoy this."
"Because it's fun."
"You enjoy watching me suffer?"
"I enjoy dancing."
"Same thing."
Lena sat beside her. "You'll get used to it."
Miu took a drink before looking at her. "You really think I'm going to get better?"
"I know you will."
"You sound very confident."
"I am."
Miu smiled. "What if you're wrong?"
"I'm not."
"That's not an answer."
"It is if I'm right."
Miu laughed quietly and leaned her head against the wall.
She watched Lena as she helped another classmate with one of the steps. Lena didn't seem tired at all. She demonstrated the movement once, then again, patiently explaining how the weight should shift from one foot to the other.
Miu had seen this side of Lena before, but usually from a distance. 🔽
