Turkey travel warning: what to do after a stray cat bite or scratch abroad 🇹🇷🐈 Last week in Marmaris, Türkiye, my six-year-old son was scratched by a stray cat. The scratch broke his skin, so we were taken to hospital and he had to begin rabies post-exposure treatment. This does not mean that every stray cat has rabies or that people should be frightened of all animals. However, rabies is present in Türkiye, and any possible exposure involving a bite, scratch or animal saliva on broken skin should be taken seriously. Rabies attacks the brain and nervous system. Once symptoms begin, it is almost always fatal—but prompt medical treatment after an exposure can prevent the disease. If you’re bitten or scratched by an animal abroad: 1️⃣ Wash the wound immediately with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes. 2️⃣ Apply antiseptic if available. 3️⃣ Seek urgent medical advice locally—ideally the same day. 4️⃣ Do not wait until you return to the UK or until symptoms appear. 5️⃣ A doctor will assess whether you need rabies vaccines and, in some cases, rabies immunoglobulin. 6️⃣ Complete the full treatment course exactly as advised. Parents: teach children not to touch unfamiliar animals and to tell you immediately if they are bitten or scratched—even if the injury looks minor and the animal appears healthy. Save this before your next Turkey holiday and send it to someone travelling with children. ✈️ Have you or someone you know ever been bitten or scratched by an animal abroad? This video shares our experience and general public-health guidance. Always seek professional medical advice following a possible rabies exposure. #TurkeyTravel #MarmarisTurkey #TurkeyHoliday #RabiesAwareness #StrayCats
