My guess is the husband knew about the poor relationship with her mother and knew that his wife would not have wanted her mother involved. He might just be honoring his wife’s wishes.

I’m so sorry for the husband. I lost my friend to a pulmonary embolism three years ago due to a DVT. May he found peace in his grief.

is it just me or does mom sound controlling? what is there to know about that day that would change anything about it being a PE? she can't see that he is hurting from the death of his wife and deserves to grieve in peace, not answer irrelevant questions that wouldn't clarify anything. I can see a world where she twists everything someone says or does into something else (like why would he say all information will come from one person unless mom is known for pitting people against each other/lying about what a person has said to other people).

I know it's a different direction for your content, but the case where the bride was killed on her wedding night (by a drunk driver) the mother is suing her new son for the life insurance bc she said the marriage wasn't official yet (like legally filed) they had the ceremony and the bride was killed that night. it seems outrageous that she would have a case. her new husband didn't cause her death. etc. would love your take on that case

I’m sure if the circumstances were reversed she’d be telling her daughter’s significant other that information should come through one person: her. The husband seems to have known his wife would not have wanted her mother involved and he respected her wishes. She got married privately and it says everything.

I agree with you. How did she not know her own daughter got married? She said she got married in "secret" but I'm sure there were other people there when they got married so it wasn't a secret, the daughter just didn't tell her mom. I can't imagine the pain she's going through but like you said, she's not entitled to any info. If they had been closer then I'm sure the husband would of shared alot more with the mom

Are death certificates public? Can OP order a copy?

OP says she suspects the daughter may have been pregnant, and my question is what would that information do for her right now?

TBH I’d contact an Attorney in GA and invite the police into the story. Truly abusive people isolate their partners from their families. Did she get the PE as a result of …what? Violence? An accident? I’d keep the drama to a minimum and go fact finding. I would feel I would owe it to my daughter to make sure she has justice of foul play was what led to the PE imho

It sounds like the information was shared, including the results of the autopsy. Shes just upset that she's not in control of the information and won't accept what was found. They guarded the wedding and I feel the husband responsibly guarded her privacy in death as well.

The fact that the daughter got married and didnt tell OP says a lot. Sounds like the hubby knows all about how his wife felt about her mother. Which is why he did not give her that access.

Mom is telling the story her way. I'd like to hear the son in law's side because I suspect mom was demanding and rude and not very considerate of someone who just lost his wife unexpectedly. You get more flies with honey not vinegar. And talking to the charge nurse will not give her closure. All that nurse can say is she came in short of breath, we did testing and before the treatment could take effect she went into cardiac arrest and we couldn't get her back. They will not discuss sensitive info like pregnancy which is considered private.

I agree that you are not entitled to this information. However, I also think it’s important. You understand that it probably will not give you the closure you wanted to. Further, if there is something in that record that the husband is choosing for you to not see, he may have a good reason for it. A pregnancy? That’s a good example of something he may not want to share because it was between the two of them. He’s entitled to feel that way.

Im curious about why the woman didnt just try to communicate with her daughters husband. Like could they not have a civil chat amd could he not amswer questions about the situation. He was obviously there and should be just as able to answer questions

I’m assuming the son-in-law knew his wife’s feelings about her mom. And as you said “buckle up”, because It is SO hard as a parent. I have a 20 yr old. The day he turned 18, I no longer had rights to his medical info. I was helping him get his records to get into the Army, and it was frustrating because I couldn’t get anything without his consent, and he wanted my help. I took a child development class in HS and I’ll never forget when the teacher stated: “you should have children because of what you can do for them, not because of what they can do for you”. It’s always stuck with me. I chose to have 3. I am giving them the best childhood I can manage. I also remember this: you will have a relationship with your child for more years when they’re an adult, than the 18 years you spent raising them”. (Not a direct quote). That blew my mind because I had never thought of it that way. So, fellow parents, think about that. Raise your children keeping in mind what type of relationship you want with them when they’re grown. And by grown, I mean the day they turn 18, because on that day, they can choose to not have you in their life. My oldest is 20 and in the Army, he doesn’t “need” me. He has a paid job, he has housing, he has medical. The only thing he needs me for is emotional support and love, and that is by his choice. My middle is about to be a senior in HS. He will turn 18 in Nov. it’s strange because he’ll still be in HS, but I won’t be allowed to have access to his medical. He plans to go to college and we plan to pay for it. So, he will “need” us, but even so, I plan to respect him as an adult, and I’d never hold paying for his college over his head, that is a choice his dad and I are making. I’m sorry to this mom, I know it’s very painful. But I think your advice was solid. Hopefully she can have a good relationship with her other children.

You are right this information is hard to hear but I totally agree. Speaking as a mom this wouldn’t stop me from having the joy of children. 🥰

I don't think you should assume foul play or abuse but the SIL. It sounds like the SIL and his wife's mother didn't know each other! And he is probably also dealing with his grief. Who knows what he's heard about the mother

Ok but did the hospital verify the marriage? whenever I showed up at the hospital, they never asked for a marriage cert for my husband who was there with me, but they certainly recorded his comments as being from my husband
