This station is stuck in 1930. And it still has the bullet holes to prove it. Step off the platform and you walk into a dim concrete tunnel under the tracks that looks exactly like prewar Japan because it quite literally is. But the outside wall is the craziest part. Those holes are from an American fighter plane. In the final months of WWII, US P-51s ran out of real targets and started strafing anything that moved. Trains, boats, civilians. Kokudo Station took a burst of machine gun fire, and the scars are still in the concrete today. They’ve put a net over them now to stop the wall from crumbling. (btw to find more weird wonders like check out Deep Spot in our bio 😉) The tunnel underneath used to be a whole shopping arcade. More than twenty shops. Clothes, toys, food, fishing gear. This was the busiest street in the area, packed with dockworkers and craftsmen. The last shop closed a few years ago. There wasn’t enough traffic here to incentivize railway companies to invest in infrastructure. Today, there isn’t even a single attendant. Kurosawa filmed here. His 1949 noir Stray Dog used this exact tunnel. Koreeda shot here too. It’s the kind of place that only exists because everyone forgot to tear it down.
