This structure is actually a vintage illuminated subway entrance sign, with the word “SUBWAY” displayed vertically inside the frame. Its tall design allowed passengers to identify the station entrance from a considerable distance, especially at night. Unlike the familiar green globe lamps and modern subway signs used throughout the city today, this rare marker appears to be a surviving example of an older New York City Transit entrance design. The 45th Street station originally opened on September 22, 1915, as part of the BMT Fourth Avenue Line. However, photographs from the 1940s show that these exact markers were not present at the time. Based on that evidence, it is reasonable to assume that the Transit Authority installed them sometime after the subway system was unified and the station underwent several renovations. This also appears to be the only station along the Fourth Avenue Line with this specific entrance design.
