The Korean War (1950–1953) The Korean War was a major proxy conflict of the Cold War fought between North Korea (supported by the Soviet Union and China) and South Korea (supported by the United Nations, primarily the United States). Background: Following WWII, the Korean peninsula was split along the 38th parallel into a communist North (led by Kim Il-sung) and a capitalist South (led by Syngman Rhee). Outbreak (June 1950): North Korean troops invaded South Korea to unify the country under communism, pushing South Korean and US forces back to the Pusan Perimeter. UN Counteroffensive: UN forces led by General Douglas MacArthur launched a surprise amphibious landing at Inchon, pushing North Korean forces back near the Chinese border. Chinese Intervention: Fearing a US presence on its border, China entered the war with hundreds of thousands of "volunteers," pushing UN forces back to the 38th parallel. Stalemate & Armistice (1951–1953): The war settled into a grueling war of attrition near the original border. On July 27, 1953, an armistice agreement was signed, creating the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Because no formal peace treaty was ever signed, the two nations technically remain at war today. Soviet-Finnish Conflict: The Continuation War (1941–1944) The war where Finland aligned with Nazi Germany against the Soviet Union is known as the Continuation War (Jatkosota). It followed the earlier Winter War (1939–1940), in which the USSR invaded Finland and annexed Finnish territory (such as Karjala). Co-belligerence with Nazi Germany: Seeking to reclaim lost land, Finland joined Nazi Germany's invasion of the USSR (Operation Barbarossa) in June 1941. Finland framed its alliance not as full ideological Nazi alignment, but as "co-belligerence" against a common enemy. Finnish Offensive (1941): Finnish troops quickly recaptured lost territories in Karelia and advanced to positions around Leningrad, contributing to the Siege of Leningrad without launching a full assault on the city itself. Soviet Counteroffensive (1944): As the war turned against Germany, the Red Army launched massive offensives against Finnish positions in mid-1944. Finnish forces mounted a strong defense at the Battle of Tali-Ihantala, halting the Soviet advance. Moscow Armistice (September 1944): Realizing Germany was losing WWII, Finland signed an armistice with the Soviet Union. Finland ceded even more land, paid reparations, and had to drive remaining German forces out of its territory (the Lapland War). The Polish-Soviet War (1919–1920) The Polish-Soviet War was a conflict fought immediately after World War I between the newly restored Second Polish Republic and Bolshevik Russia. Background: Following the collapse of the German and Russian Empires after WWI, Polish leader Józef Piłsudski sought to secure Poland's eastern borders and form a federation (Międzymorze) in Eastern Europe. Meanwhile, Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks wanted to spread the communist revolution westward into Germany and Western Europe. Initial Polish Success: In early 1920, Polish and Ukrainian allied forces launched the Kiev Offensive, capturing Kyiv from the Soviets in May 1920. Soviet Counter-Attack: The Red Army, led by Mikhail Tukhachevsky and Semyon Budyonny, launched a swift counteroffensive, pushing Polish forces all the way back to the gates of Warsaw. Battle of Warsaw (August 1920): Known as the "Miracle on the Vistula," Piłsudski executed a daring flank maneuver that shattered the Soviet forces, turning a near-certain defeat into a decisive victory. Peace of Riga (1921): The war ended with the Treaty of Riga in March 1921, establishing borders that gave Poland significant territory in Western Ukraine and Belarus, halting the westward spread of Soviet communism for two decades. #southkorea🇰🇷 #finland🇫🇮 #poland🇵🇱 #History #fyp
