@itspaulagorman: Rules I break as a consultant. 1. I don’t build decks. If a presentation helps move a decision forward, great. But I wasn’t hired to make slides. I was hired to solve problems. 2. I don’t have a pitch deck. Every client has a different challenge. I treat Discovery as conversations not a pitch. 3. I don’t charge by the hour. Clients aren’t paying for my time. They’re paying for my judgment, experience, and ability to move the work forward. 4. I don’t have service packages. I scope around the problem the client needs solved instead of trying to fit every engagement into a predefined offer. 5. I don’t say yes to everything. Sometimes the most valuable thing I can tell a client is, “I don’t think we should do that.” There’s no single playbook for building an independent consulting business. A lot of it is figuring out how you want to work and what your clients genuinely need from you. That’s also a lot of what we talk about inside @@theconsultantsroom pricing, scoping, business development, client situations, and all the messy judgment calls that come with doing this work independently. If you want more of those conversations, come join us. Link in bio.

No service packages? Ugh, I'm gonna have to join another office hours to understand this concept. I'm wrecking my brain over this part of consulting.

When they say “send me your company exec overview” I say no, and zero chance of doing day rate work. It’s outcome based or nothing

I’m struggling with the service packages, so far they’ve been custom per client but I’d like to put them on my website but it feels so final

so what is the basis for your pricing? do you estimate the hours it will take you to complete the job and then give a flat fee or do you have a price list based on the tasks you perform?

THE BRAND COPY :
Them: “Send me a deck of how you do x, y and z” me: “Nope, we don’t send pitch decks on our methods until work is confirmed” Them: “we can’t move forward then” Me: “Sounds great, have a wonderful day” I love this! I share the same policy. You only send decks once work is confirmed!

OMG how do you get around it. Not gonna lie, I just use AI to build decks ( I work in tech and it’s required)

As a CEO who only hires consultants, just send me the SOW. If I found you through my network, I want that and a zoom call. Plus I want to test our communication styles.
