When we think of roll-offs, we usually teach them as a diversionary tactic. Rolling off to lose a WD on the centre pass. Rolling to make a lead down the court. Those are great. But if that’s the only way we’re teaching our players to use them, we’re missing out. 😉 One of the best (and cheekiest) uses of a roll-off is to rearrange positioning around the body of the defender inside the goal circle. Right when they think they’ve got the shooter boxed out. (Important note: this is not leaning into your player and barrelling your way out. This is footwork alone, using their body as an anchor to stay close and not concede an inch of space as you roll.) Players, the technique is all about the footwork. Plant one foot as your pivot, roll your torso around the defender’s body. The outer foot comes underneath your body to carry the agile footwork that gets you to front position. Stay light, stay reactive. From there you can edge your way into front position like the first clip, or push off for a lead like the second. Coaches, this is where to watch. If your players are getting pinned for contact or can’t quite get the hang of it, watch the pivot point and where the next step lands. Are they drifting too far away from the body? Are they looping around instead of a hard pivot? That’s usually where it falls apart. Pssstt… Defenders, you can absolutely use this tactic too. Rolling into back space, rolling off a strong hold, rolling around into front position. It’s only limited by your imagination. 😏 Coaches: Roll-offs, body positioning and holding space are all built into our Session Plans. Save this and let us know if you give it a crack at training this week! 📌
