This is a BRAIN warm-up/wake up, NOT an exercise for building muscle or strength! Never a dull moment around here... This is a warm-up I do occasionally when I'll be working more technique-heavy exercises like barbell clean and press or when I'm not feeling like my brain is fully engaged when doing normal warm-ups. Because of the contralateral antagonistic movement (e.g. tricep extension with the left hand while bicep curling with the right hand) and focus required, this IMMEDIATELY gets the brain dialed in for training. It ALSO doubles as a shoulder and elbow joint, bicep, tricep, deltoid, upper back and core warm-up, too (almost your entire upper body). Does it LOOK insane?... Absolutely. Does it work? Yes, it does. If you're familiar with the concept of crawling training, this is where I got the idea from. One of the most important phases of infant brain development is the crawling phase. This is where the body learns to coordinate the movement of opposing limbs to create movement. This helps develop the cross-connections in the brain. This type of brain engagement can be replicated in adults by doing crawling exercises (I've posted a weighted bear crawl exercise for core before) or by doing contralateral antagonistic movements like this. If you want to try it, go SLOW at first and use LIGHT weight (I'm using 25's). It's going to take a bit of practice so take each step one at a time until you get the coordination. Start by curling ONE dumbbell up, then pressing it overhead, then coming down to the bottom of the overhead db tricep extension. NOW the fun starts. At the SAME time, curl the other dumbbell up while doing the tricep extension. Now press the curled dumbbell overhead while you lower the other one. Lower the pressed dumbbell down to the bottom of the extension, while lowering via curl the other dumbbell. Then repeat. Again, go SLOW then gradually increase speed. --- Got a lagging muscle group or exercise? Do THIS program for 3 weeks...
