$500k in NYC ain’t shit. About 1/2 is taxes and $250k net is nothing. $24,500 401k $7,500 IRA HSA and FSA maxed out and 529 maxed and the $6k on MTA to show up to work. Not much. Suburban homes are all $1.5-3mm without sweating.

I def don’t live paycheck to paycheck. Thats crazy talk. But I can see how that can happen especially if your housing is $10k to $15k

Not true, taxes are punitive and go up based on total income, not $39% immediately.

If it is for individual income getting a one bedroom apartment , but or rent, it is good. If it is for a family, paycheck to paycheck is likely

does living paycheck to paycheck mean they’d have to withdraw from their hysa or sell a liquid asset if they missed a paycheck? because that’s not a big deal, and how else does 40%+ make sense if not for some loose interpretation like this

Highly doubt. Would like to see their definition of “paycheck to paycheck”. Chances are, they are counting 401k contributions. However, if you are investing - you do not qualify as “paycheck to paycheck”

It’s all about debt. Your credit rating tells the story. If you’re making over $300k and your credit rating is under 650 you’ve got a debt issue.

This seems like garbage. I make about $36K a month gross and my wife is at about $10K a month gross in a major west coast market. We live very comfortably while putting away a significant amount in investment accounts every year. I can see $300K being tough in some markets but $500K you are doing something wrong.

If you’re living “paycheck to paycheck” on that, then you’re both succeeding and failing at life at the same time.
