@therealniccoy: Your brain can create a symptom from an expectation. That’s the nocebo effect. When negative expectations, conditioning, and anxiety can contribute to real physical symptoms, even when the treatment or trigger itself isn’t causing them. Research has linked nocebo responses to changes in pain processing, anxiety, cortisol, and other neurobiological pathways. And then there’s the bizarre story of the “meowing nuns.” A 19th-century account describes one nun in a French convent beginning to meow like a cat, followed by other nuns until the behavior supposedly spread throughout the convent. The story appears in Hecker’s The Epidemics of the Middle Ages (1844), but the original source was never identified, so it should be treated as a historical anecdote, not a verified scientific study. Still, the underlying science is fascinating: What you expect can influence what you experience. Your brain isn’t just responding to the world. It’s constantly interpreting it. And sometimes, changing the interpretation changes the experience. 🧠 #nocebo #expectation #mindset #psychology #traumahealing

Any idea if peripheral neuropathy can develop as a result? Central sensation can make it worse. I am aware of. I developed it somewhat out of the blue and neurologists have no idea why despite all kinds of testing. Quite a few people live with idiopathic neuropathy, so I wonder how much is caused by the mind or if there’s some other cause

There’s a town in Germany where the population danced themselves to death. Plus there’s St. Vitus’s Dance caused by mould on wheat etc that causes mass hallucinations. Yep I’m a fact collecting Racoon 🦝
