Reform UK wants to scrap PIP to save money, but have they actually thought about what happens when unpaid care can no longer continue? The numbers are pretty stark. Using the latest UK Government adult social care figures, externally provided home care costs an average of £23.56 an hour. At just 35 hours a week, that’s £42,907.20 a year. The average cost of residential or nursing care is £1,185.55 a week — that’s £61,648.60 a year. These are NOT claims that every person losing PIP will require 35 hours of paid care or residential care. They’re simply the annualised costs of the official care rates, to show the scale of the potential cost if unpaid care has to be replaced. So when Reform UK talks about saving money by cutting PIP, we need to ask a very simple question: How much of that saving disappears if the unpaid care currently being provided by families has to be replaced with paid care? The care doesn’t disappear when the benefit does. The cost just moves.
