@dr.matthew.parker: One of the weirdest stories in psychiatry: the first antidepressant wasn't actually developed as an antidepressant. Iproniazid was originally used to treat tuberculosis. Doctors noticed something pretty unexpected—patients seemed more energetic, more social, and generally…happier. That observation eventually helped lead to the discovery of MAO inhibitors and the modern era of antidepressant treatment. So yes, one of the major breakthroughs in treating depression basically started with doctors noticing that their TB patients were suddenly in a better mood. Psychiatry has a lot of weird history. #MentalHealth #psychiatry #MentalHealthAwareness #depression #anxiety
If I had a nickel for every medication or medical procedure that was discovered by accident...🤔😂

It's unfortunate how some medications that work have terrible side effects. I just watched the season in call the midwife about the anxiety medicine that gave babies in early development horrible birth defects

Librium was also discovered by accident and 5 years later, Valium was introduced. Imipramine was intended to be used for psychosis and noticed it help with depressive symptoms. Thorazine was also discovered by accident. It’s so odd that all of these meds were discovered by accident.
