the way this kind of feels like a controversial opinion makes me feel how integrated this mentality is in the western/modern psyche.. also! this is not an argument against therapy, but sometimes I find this ~mass commercialization of therapy in our culture interesting and either a proponent or reflection/symptom of our culture of self-obsession. We’re all in therapy but I don’t see us happier as a whole? I think the onus of therapy can also be a way to shirk the real responsibility of greater systems and institutions and their impact on a population’s well being etc. anywayyy this is clearly a half-baked thought, but I’ve been interested in this idea of “the promise of improvement” that guides every decision of ours in this age of self optimization. A Pilates class that signals health and leisure or wealth and class, therapy that has become a cachet or currency of emotional well being or maturity, an app that signals our embrace of modernism or class, a pantsuit that signals power- everything from our consumer choices to our life decisions sometimes feel like a promise of improvement that I’m not sure ever gets fulfilled? Just things I’m mulling over! Nothing I’d stand on yet :)
