พระพุทธชินสีห์ สร้างขึ้นคราวเดียวกันกับพระพุทธชินราช และพระศาสดา เป็นพระพุทธรูปสำคัญพระองค์หนึ่งของหัวเมืองฝ่ายเหนือ ได้ประดิษฐานอยู่ในพระวิหารด้านเหนือของวัดพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุ จังหวัดพิษณุโลกมาแต่ต้น ต่อมาพระวิหารชำรุดทรุดโทรมลง ขาดการปฏิสังขรณ์ สมเด็จพระบวรราชเจ้ามหาศักดิพลเสพย์ จึงโปรดให้อัญเชิญมาประดิษฐานที่วัดบวรนิเวศวิหาร เมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๓๗๒ โดยประดิษฐานไว้มุขหลังของพระอุโบสถที่เป็นจตุรมุข ต่อมาพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว สมัยเมื่อยังทรงผนวช และครองวัดบวรนิเวศวิหารอยู่ ได้ทูลขอพระบรมราชานุญาตพระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว อัญเชิญพระพุทธชินสีห์มาเป็นพระประธานในพระอุโบสถ พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงเคารพนับถือพระพุทธชินสีห์มาก ได้โปรดให้กะไหล่รัศมีองค์พระด้วยทองคำ ฝังพระเนตรฝังเพชรที่พระอุณาโลม แล้วปิดทองทั้งองค์พระ เมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๓๙๓ ต่อมาเมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๓๙๗ ได้โปรดให้หล่อฐานด้วยทองสัมฤทธิ์ ปิดทองใหม่ทั้งองค์พระและฐาน แล้วให้มีการสมโภช ๕ วัน Phra Phuttha Chinnasri was created at the same time as Phra Phuttha Chinnarat and Phra Sasada and is one of the most important Buddha images of the northern provinces. It was originally enshrined in the northern vihara of Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat in Phitsanulok. However, as the vihara deteriorated over time and lacked proper restoration, His Royal Highness Prince Maha Sakkdiphonlasep ordered its relocation to Wat Bowonniwet Vihara in 1829 (B.E. 2372), where it was enshrined in the rear portico of the cruciform ordination hall. Later, during the reign of King Rama III, His Majesty King Mongkut (then a monk and the abbot of Wat Bowonniwet Vihara) sought royal permission to install Phra Phuttha Chinnasri as the principal Buddha image in the ordination hall. King Mongkut held Phra Phuttha Chinnasri in great reverence and, in 1850 (B.E. 2393), ordered the gilding of its halo with gold, the embedding of diamonds in its eyes and urna, and the gilding of the entire image.
