For generations, they’ve relied only on breath-holding techniques and passed their knowledge from mother to daughter, earning recognition as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Today, most active haenyeo are in their 60s to 80s, making this remarkable tradition more important than ever to preserve. If you want to see them in action, one of the best places is Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak), where they perform traditional diving demonstrations and often sell their fresh catch afterward. Performances are typically held daily around 2:00 PM (weather permitting), so it’s worth planning your visit around that time.
