That means when it takes a direct hit like this, there's essentially nothing to absorb the impact before it reaches bone. This kind of collision commonly causes a deep contusion or hematoma, bleeding and swelling trapped between the bone and skin, which is exactly why shin injuries tend to bruise so dramatically and stay painful for days afterward. In more severe impacts, a hit like this can even cause a tibial fracture, especially if there's significant force or an awkward angle involved. It's also worth noting the periosteum, the thin, nerve-rich membrane covering the bone, is extremely sensitive, which is a big part of why shin injuries feel disproportionately painful compared to hits almost anywhere else on the body.
