At 300k a year they should have way more than 1.6 million. Stop spending so much and save more. Simple.

me and my wife's SS will be 6k combined, my union pension another 8k plus 1.5 mil in retirement. we are retiring at 55 and our 401k's will fill in the gap until 62. I started in the union at 35 and in 20 years I will have 8k a month. the rich have trick everyone into thinking unions are bad, but they fight for you.
almost forgot, through my union we get lifetime subsidized medical. only $400 a minth for our Cadillac plan.

Most people aren't willing to do more Govmt / Public service jobs. There are jobs you can make 300k each person / year, still retire with 1.6 with a good pension and lifetime health care. Your 1.6 will grow before you reach 65 and you can draw closer to 100k a year and not even need it.
