@wayblackwhen: Canada Hanged Her On A 5-Year-Old's Word The 1709 law Canada signed, and the woman it burned alive for it in 1734 Canada legalized slavery in 1709, and in 1734 it hanged an enslaved woman named Marie-Josèphe Angélique on the word of a five-year-old child. This is the buried history behind the Montreal fire that burned forty-five houses and a hospital in under three hours. Angélique was born around 1705 in Madeira, sold into slavery, and brought to Montreal in 1725. When her mistress tried to sell her south, she ran across a frozen river to escape. Weeks later, Montreal burned, and she was arrested within a day, tried for seven weeks on rumor alone, tortured with the brodequins, and executed by another enslaved man forced to hold the rope. Her trial transcript survives as one of the longest recorded voices of an enslaved woman in North American history.
