It's filled with a thick, gel-like synovial fluid that has leaked out through a small stalk connecting it to the joint capsule. Applying firm, direct pressure like this can physically force that fluid back through the stalk and into the joint space, temporarily flattening the bump. It might look satisfying, but it's important to understand this isn't a permanent fix. Since the underlying sac and stalk are still intact, the fluid often refills over the following days, and the cyst returns. If you're dealing with one yourself, know that self-compressing a cyst repeatedly isn't actually recommended, it can cause bruising, tissue damage, or unnecessary pain without solving the root issue. If a cyst is bothersome or keeps coming back, the proper options are needle aspiration to drain it under sterile conditions, or surgical removal of the entire sac if it's recurrent, which is the only method that actually addresses the stalk itself and prevents it from returning long-term.
