![BRAND NEW NIGHT — RECOVERED REEL 126 [ SPIDER-MAN — CYBERPUNK PILOT 1986 ] The city had forgotten him. He wasn’t sure it was wrong to. In 1986, a production unit registered in Osaka under the name Nightfall Reel Co. — no prior credits, financed by a private optics manufacturer whose corporate filing lists no products and no operating address — completed 32 minutes of 16mm footage across eight nights on a purpose-built exterior set: eleven blocks of a city that existed nowhere, wet permanently by rain machines that the location log records as running continuously for the full duration of the shoot. The set was built on reclaimed industrial land outside the city. The build documents account for the neon. They do not account for the power. The Spider-Man pilot had no dialogue for the first fourteen minutes. A masked figure moving above street level while below him, screens on every surface played advertisements the art department confirms they did not create. The cinematographer’s notes record that in every wide shot, one screen in the background displays the same footage — a face, unmasked, that appears in no other part of the film and matches no member of the cast. The director’s production note dated November 4th 1986 reads: “we have decided not to identify the man on the screens. two of the crew believe they recognise him. they do not agree on who he is.” It aired once on a UHF channel in Osaka, December 12th 1986. Runtime: 32 minutes. The station log carries no title and no production credit. A viewer wrote in describing the closing shot — the figure removing the mask in the rain, and every screen in frame going dark at the same moment, as though the city had stopped needing to remember. Nightfall Reel Co. dissolved in February 1987. The set was never struck. The land it stands on has been registered to no owner since 1987.
