@osteoarthritisphysio: A follower sent me this clinic letter... and I wish more people with arthritis heard these messages. ✔️ Your X-ray doesn't determine how much pain you'll have. ✔️ "Bone on bone" doesn't automatically mean you need surgery. ✔️ Many people improve with the right conservative management. One thing I'd add... If your goal is to avoid or delay surgery, make sure you're seeing the right person. Orthopaedic surgeons are experts in diagnosis, injections and surgery. Physiotherapists are experts in conservative management and rehabilitation. They're not competing roles—they're different parts of the same pathway. 💬 Have you ever been told you're "bone on bone"? ➡️ Watch my video on "Why doesn't my xray doesn't match my pain" @Luke I Osteoarthritis Physio (with consent) #arthritis #kneepain #physio #osteoarthritis #boneonbone
No, not acceptable in any way ! The clue is in the phrase ‘bone on bone’ - What’s the problem ? Don’t want to acknowledge that people need joint replacements, just like your car tyres, when they’re worn out ? The ‘tread’ has all gone !!!!!!

Iv been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my neck through a xray. Then pain as become very intense, lack of sleep and appetite. Went to the doctor prescribed anti inflammatory, stomach protected and 10mg of antidepressants 🤔 didn’t want to take the antidepressants. Now Iv gone to a physio who’s as explained my results properly to me the bottom 4 are closing up and spares are growing and causing inflammation and pain. The top three bones are out of line. To sore to massage and she is giving me acupuncture. Told me to take the antidepressants because the anti inflammatory ones are not enough on their own. This is a two week process up to now. It does settle a little but keep getting flare ups. I’m a 61yr old women on hrt been a very fit active with my job and sports and iv gone to nothing. Feel like it’s all being taken away. Would love not to take medication but want normality for my age.

That may be true for a few people but I did conservative treatment for 5 years, injections, physio, osteo, PT, chiro and ablation for labral tears, cysts and now arthritis. I can no longer sleep or walk for more than 20 minutes, I was an international athlete for over 14 years so will now undergo resurfacing. My life has been hell for over 6 years now.

I have osteoarthritis in my fingers. The joints have completely disintegrated and now my fingers are deformed. There’s not much hope for me apart from pain relief which we’re happy to try as a last hope before going back to the orthopaedics

I have recently seen an orthopaedic after having ultrasound, xray and mri of the knee. I have been diagnosed with a meniscus tear, bone on bone of the knee and severe arthritis. I am following both instructions from physio ie stretches etc to try and fix the meniscus without a procedure. I will be going for another mri in 6 weeks time. I’ve been told I will need a full knee replacement at some point. I get that the meniscus can heal, but bone on bone where the shock absorber has completely worn isn’t going to heal🤔 I too am 57 and whilst I get we want to try and avoid surgery, for a lot of us we are delaying the inevitable.

I had a double hip replacement in March. Bone on bone. I wasn't in pain but had mobility issues. I tried everything. Rehab works but you need a couple of hours everyday. It is impossible to maintain. I am in a great place now.

Severe osteoarthritis in right hip mild to severe in the left, also osteoporosis. I’m 68 and I recently had a flare, started physiotherapy and my wellbeing improved a lot. I just couldn’t use my right leg to turn my body without causing sharp pain. I want to avoid surgery and I’m doing all I can for that. And yes , consistency is the key.
