Happy AL🌋HA Friday! Could Kilauea’s lava fountains grow tall again? According to USGS: “Scientists at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory are studying how magma chemistry may help explain why fountain heights rise and fall in cycles. By analyzing rapidly cooled tephra and the magnesium content in olivine crystals, researchers can track how hot and fresh the magma is. After Episode 44, they detected a new type of olivine that suggests the magma had time to cool and differentiate, possibly due to a drop in magma supply. Recent data show increasing magnesium levels and fountain heights in Episodes 46–48, hinting that Kilauea could be entering another growth period.” In simple terms: scientists are seeing signs that Kilauea’s lava fountains *could* start growing taller again.
