@metrouk: Mallorca is preparing for another anti-tourism protest. Thousands of residents have taken to the streets, saying mass tourism is putting pressure on housing, infrastructure and everyday life on the island. A second demonstration is now planned in Soller following clashes between protesters and police in Palma. #Protest #Mallorca #Antitourism #tourism

90% of Mallorcas income is from tourism. Either directly or indirectly (construction, retail, etc).

For the people who are confused, the problem isn’t just tourists; foreign real estate companies have been mass buying flats and houses and turning them into airbnbs and such. This not only causes more tourists than the cities can handle, but it also causes housing prices to skyrocket for locals, meaning many people can’t afford to live in the cities they’ve been living in forever and causing displacement. Another reason to protest (key word mass) mass tourism is this displacement causes a dependancy on it, local businesses close and get turned into more tourist traps by foreign investors and the only jobs available are minimum wage catering to tourists. It’s like a toxic cycle, it was okay a few years ago when people would come other and adapt to the locals, not vice versa like what is happening now.

Half Scottish half mallorcan here. They’re not marching for no tourism, they’re marching for controlled tourism. There is literally nowhere to live for residents. If you think house prices are bad here? Try Mallorca. It’s impossible for them.

They need to go for the politicians that are allowing excessive sales to foreign investors rather than the tourists themselves

How long have we realized that tourism brings negative impacts for local residents? For so long, we—and people in general—have only looked at the economic side—the money it generates—while turning a blind eye to the consequences it causes...

They are basically being priced out of their own housing market foreign investors with holiday lets ect. Mallorca has a relatively small population 1.2 million approx they are seeing 18-19 million visitors which is an astronomical amount that they don't have the infrastructure for that volume it would be like the UK getting approx 450-500 million visitors per year where they currently get approx 50 million.
