🎶🔥 Modest Mussorgsky — Pictures at an Exhibition (1874) · Kazuhito Yamashita — solo guitar 🎸 • Classical guitarists hated Kazuhito Yamashita. Not for lack of technique — for excess. He invented ways of playing that didn't exist: single-finger tremolo, attacks that mimicked entire orchestral sections, left-hand extensions at the anatomical limit. When he released his transcription of Pictures in 1981, the community split in two. Half called it a historic milestone. The other half called it madness. The instrument had never been treated like that — and never was again. • Viktor Hartmann was an architect and painter. He died of a brain aneurysm at 39. Mussorgsky wrote to Stasov: "Hartmann is boiling like Boris boiled — sounds and ideas float in the air, I can barely scribble them down on paper." Of the more than 400 works shown at the 1874 memorial exhibition, fewer than 65 survive today. Most of the paintings that inspired the suite have vanished. The sound that remains is the only record of what Hartmann painted. • Born in Nagasaki in 1961, Yamashita didn't just transcribe the piano original — he blended Mussorgsky with Ravel's orchestration, squeezing dozens of instruments into six strings. One critic wrote that listening to the recording was like being hit in the face. By 32 he had 52 albums to his name. He formed a guitar quintet with his own children. He died at 64, in January. What remains is this video — and the certainty that an instrument's limits only exist until someone decides to ignore them. • 👉 Follow — the best of classical music, daily in your feed. • • • #guitar #guitarist #classicalguitar #classicalmusic
