@thebrainmaze: How the speed of light was measured - We created this animation to show how scientists in the 19th century were able to measure the speed of light using a remarkably clever experiment. By sending a beam of light through a rotating toothed gear toward a distant mirror, researchers could determine how long the light took to travel there and back based on the exact speed at which the returning beam became blocked by the next tooth.

1848-49 - Fizeau used an intense limelight formed into a beam using two astronomical telescopes, one in the bell tower of his father's holiday home in Suresnes, and one 8,633 meters away on Montmartre. At the exit of the Montmartre telescope the light was reflected back to Suresnes where a second, half-silvered mirror reflected the light into Fizeau's eye. His measurement was off by 4.5%.

if I watch this several times and don't exactly understand. does it mean I'm stupid? I mean I know it has to do with being able to calculate rotation speed of the gear and based on the gaps etc knowing the speed of light but I can't wrap my head around it

Technically it’s not measuring “the speed” of light. It’s measuring how long light takes to go in one direction, reflect, go in another direction, reflect, and then be measured. While you can make assumptions, and ‘confirm’ with mathematical modeling… you aren’t actually measuring lights speed.
