@calmmoneycoach: Who To Hire For Your Estate Six bank-owned trust companies in this country will act as your executor. Not one of them publishes what it charges. I spent this week trying to find out. RBC's fee agreement is sitting at a public web address with a password on the PDF. TD will tell you it's a percentage of assets and nothing more. The other four say nothing at all. So the $45,000 in this video comes from Heritage Trust in BC, the one Canadian trust company that puts its schedule on the internet. 3.5% on the first million, 2% after that. Here's the part that actually bothers me. Your executor's fee is the biggest single cost in most estates and it's the only one nobody quotes you in advance. People will compare will prices to the dollar. Then they'll name someone, or some institution, and nobody mentions that the choice was worth $35,000 on an ordinary house-and-RRSP estate. One thing there wasn't room for. What an executor can claim isn't one Canadian rule, it's thirteen. BC, Nova Scotia, PEI and Newfoundland cap it at 5% in the statute. Ontario has no tariff at all. Alberta's famous percentages come from a 1995 document that says on its own face it has no official sanction. And Quebec flips it: your liquidator gets paid if they aren't an heir, and gets nothing if they are, unless the will says otherwise. Full guide's in the community.
